B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Science The Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) is a 3-year program designed to provide expertise in diagnostic testing, protocols, and practical skills. Open to individuals with high school qualifications, it prepares students for roles in hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and accredited labs as Biomedical Scientists, Lab Technologists, or Lab Managers. Globally, the demand for skilled lab professionals is high, offering promising career opportunities and competitive salaries.
The first semester of the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science programme establishes a foundational understanding of the field. Students begin with an Introduction to Medical Laboratory Science, covering essential concepts and practices. Courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology I, General Microbiology, and Principles of Biochemistry provide a solid scientific base, while Clinical Chemistry I introduces basic diagnostic techniques. Environmental Studies is included to broaden students’ perspectives on health-related environmental factors
In the second semester, students delve deeper into specialised topics. Human Anatomy and Physiology II builds on previous knowledge, while Hematology and Blood Banking and Clinical Microbiology focus on crucial laboratory techniques and blood-related studies. Basic Pathology introduces the fundamentals of disease processes, and Medical Laboratory Techniques equip students with practical skills. Elective I allows for additional specialisation according to student’s interests.
The third semester advances student’s expertise with courses like Advanced Clinical Chemistry and Immunology and Serology, which deepen their understanding of diagnostic methods and immune system functions. Diagnostic Cytology and Medical Laboratory Management cover critical laboratory operations and diagnostics aspects. Research Methodology is included to prepare students for scientific investigation, while Elective II provides further opportunities for tailored learning.
During the fourth semester, students engage with more advanced subjects. Advanced Hematology and Molecular Diagnostics offer an in-depth exploration of blood disorders and genetic testing. Histopathology focuses on tissue analysis, and Laboratory Instrumentation provides knowledge of essential lab equipment. Open Electives I and III allow students to explore additional interests or areas of specialisation.
The fifth semester emphasises advanced topics and practical applications. Clinical Immunology and Advanced Microbiological Techniques enhance student’s immune system analysis and microbiology skills. Clinical Biochemistry expands on biochemical testing methods, while Forensic Science introduces forensic laboratory techniques. Open Electives II and IV offer opportunities for further exploration and specialisation.
In the sixth semester, students tackle complex concepts in Clinical Toxicology and Advanced Pathology, focusing on the effects of toxins and advanced disease mechanisms. Laboratory Quality Management teaches essential practices for ensuring lab accuracy and efficiency, and Healthcare Ethics and Law address ethical and legal considerations in healthcare. Open Elective III and Elective V provide additional options for personalised learning.
The seventh semester includes practical and advanced coursework. An Industry Internship provides hands-on experience in a real-world laboratory setting, while the Capstone Project integrates student’s learning into a comprehensive research project. Advanced Diagnostic Techniques and Medical Informatics cover cutting-edge diagnostic methods and health information management. Open Elective IV allows for further exploration of individual interests.
In the final semester, students refine their skills and prepare for their careers. Specialised Diagnostic Laboratory Practices offer in-depth training in specific diagnostic areas, while Professional Development and Career Planning help students transition into the workforce. Clinical Research and Healthcare Administration provide additional knowledge in research and management, with Elective VI offering one last chance for specialisation.
